The Evil Within Chapter 5

Hey guys sorry for the long wait for this story, I kind of screwed it up when I was writing it. This is more of a filler part no cliffhangers in this one. Sorry. I also posted that happy birthday post for Hayley on the 27th but it says that I posted it on the 26th because I'm in a different time zone. I serioulsy can't wait for the 'Now' Video I love that song. Anyways thank you to all of you who are sticking with my stories, it means alot! Anyways comment, buzz and enjoy. The usual :L
Hayley's Pov: I don't know if I can completely trust Josh. I barely know him and yet he expects me to just hand over my trust. He won't tell me why they are bad or what their reputation is. It's weird. For all I know Josh could be the bad guy here, not those other two. I'm so confused. I need answers. I sigh and grab my books ready to go to next period. I tugged gently on my vervain bracelet. Jeremy made Taylor and I a bracelet each with vervain in it to protect us from compulsion. We haven't caught sight of any vampires lately, but that's why where are going on a hunt tonight. Also because Jeremy showed me the local paper and it had two mysterious deaths on it. Obviously it was vampires because both victims were drained of blood. The last vampire we killed was a couple of months ago he was a classmate of mine, his name was Tom Bourne. We caught him and his friend Logan Scott draining the life out of an old man one day when we bunked class. I always knew there was something off about that kid. Logan however got away and is still on the loose. We looked him up but the internet says that Logan died in a car accident over one hundred years ago therefore we have no leads on him. Jeremy thinks that he’s behind these killings but I have a feeling that there’s more to the story than that. Approaching the science room door, I enter the class and sit at the back and open my textbook waiting for Cass to arrive. Thankfully I don't have this class with Josh.
"May I sit here?" A deep voice asks. I shoot my head up to see Jacob staring at me.
"Uh actually I am waiting for a friend" I say quickly avoiding eye contact with his amazing green eyes. I didn't know he was moved into this class.
"Please I don't know many people around here, being new and all" He says leaning against the desk.
"Well you seem to know Josh fine" I muttered barely audible. Somehow he heard this and perked his head up.
"Well I can tell you all about him if you'd like?" He offered sitting beside me.
That made me pause for a second. Did I really want to know what was going on between Josh and Jacob? I glanced at him to catch him staring at me. He sent me a small smile. Yes I really did.
"Ok well you can start by telling me why you guys hate each other" I demanded lightly, closing my book knowing that I was going to be doing no work today.
He raised his eyebrows "Feisty! I like it"
I rolled my eyes "Can you just get to the story bit please? I'm sick of being left in the dark."
At that moment Cass ran into the classroom just as the late bell rang. She looked over at me and Jacob and shot me a confused look. I shrugged and she took a seat next to Julie a nerd at the front.
"Well you see he had a girlfriend and her name was Jenna" He began but stopped as the teacher gave us a stern look.
Once the Teachers back was to us he whispered "She died in a car accident."
"I was the cause of Jenna's death" He continued, looking at the floor.
"What happened?”
"I was drunk and I was driving home from a party" He gulped "I-I didn't see her crossing the road until the last minute" I swallowed the lump that was forming in my throat.
"He and Zac have hated me ever since.”
"How long ago was this?" I asked nervously picking at the hem of my singlet.
"A long time ago" He answered not giving me a date.
I swallowed again as I processed what Jacob had just told me. Josh had lost somebody close to him; imagine the pain he would be going through. I could feel Jacob staring at me but I ignored it and re-opened my text book pretending to be interested in doing some work this lesson. I didn’t want to hear any more about Josh’s past, I should have never been so nosy. None of this was my business I should have waited for Josh to tell me when he felt ready. How was I supposed to keep this a secret from Josh?
"He loved Jenna more than anything" I heard Jacob say. Obviously he had chosen to continue this dreaded conversation. When I didn’t reply he said something else.
"He's probably never going to get over her. I think he's looking for a rebound." He hinted.
I took a deep breath catching onto his hint. I was Josh's rebound in other words. I probably meant nothing to him. He probably just wants to get in my pants. I looked away somehow feeling hurt by this. I was nothing but a rebound in Josh's eyes, a way to get over his dead girlfriend. I know that I’ve only known him for a couple of days but Josh had this strange effect on me and I kind of wanted to know more about him. I guess I was hoping for more.
"A pretty girl like you doesn't deserve to be a rebound. You deserve something real and I hope you find that one day Hayley." He whispered sincerely.
I glanced up at Jacob making eye contact with him. I froze and I couldn’t move. It's like we were both in a trance. I could feel my heart fluttering in my chest as he began to lean forward. There was something inside of me that wanted him to kiss me. He was inches away from my lips and I snapped my head away and gathered up my books just as the final bell echoed throughout the classroom. I hurried out of the class and down the hallway until I reached my locker. I forcefully shoved my books into my locker and slammed it shut. I wanted to scream. I almost let him kiss me. What was wrong with me?
Then there was another side of me that wanted to cry. I was nothing to Josh. I thought we had something even if it was small. Slinging my backpack over my shoulder I fast walked out the front door and down the road. I just wanted to get home. Suddenly a distant voice was calling my name. It was Josh. I sped up but he seemed to catch up really fast because I felt his hand touch my shoulder.
"Hayley wait!" He said quickly, running to my side.
"I’m sorry but I have to get home" I mumbled not lifting my gaze from the ground.
“Ok well I will walk you there.”
“No I’m fine thanks.”
“Hayley is something wrong? Is there something I did?”
I hesitated for a second. “Look I just want to get home.” I lied nearing a corner.
“Hayley please look at me.” He begged stepping in front of me, forcing me to stop. I looked up at the sky, pretending to be interested in it just to avoid his eyes.
“Please?” I rolled my eyes and stared at him with a bored look, waiting for him to speak.
“I don’t understand what I did wrong.” He looked like a lost puppy. I felt bad for him.
“You didn’t do anything it’s just some stuff that I heard from Jacob.” I sighed giving in to his puppy dog eyes.
"Jacob." His eyes went wide. "Hayley I thought we had a promise."
"I’m sorry but he just sat next to me and we started talking. Look I’m not mad at you; I’m just surprised that’s all.”
“Surprised? Hayley what did he say?”
“Look I will tell you later but right now I have to get home. Please know that I still want to be friends. Ok?”
He nodded before stepping out of my path. I could feel his intense stare following me as I hurried down the street. Ok surprised wouldn’t be the only word I would use to describe the information I got from Jacob. They would be surprised and hurt. I’m just going to go home and forget these small feelings I have for Josh. I won’t fall for his rebound trap. I’m his friend nothing else.
Nothing else.
